Day One SI’08
Writing into the day:
Focused Free Write: SI’08 begins…
1. Keep your hand moving. Don’t reread.
2.Don’t cross out. No editing yet.
3. Don’t stop to correct spelling, grammar etc. Just let your wild mind run free.
3. Feel free to switch topics in midstream, just keep your pens moving across the page
4. Go for the jugular. ( If something comes up in your writing that feels scary or naked, dive right in. It probably has lots of energy.)

Digital Document: Our first group pictures!
I love photos. I love being in them. I love taking them. I love returning to them, using them for digital pieces. They have a life for me, a moment frozen and these two are our first frozen moments, together as a group being forced to feel freer. I’m wondering what was each of us thinking as the photos were snapped??

The adventure begins. A lot to take in but nothing we can’t handle. We will be experts in no time. Enjoying the ride so far – seatbelt fastened, hands gripping the handle bars. I am surrounded by great people, committed to this thing, things ride, this dance called writing.

I realized what a powerful tool digitalizing a story can be.
I’d like to be able to create one this summer. I am grateful that I feel comfortable sharing with this group of teachers.

Looking at the enormous resource list to the right of my screen, I’m feeling simulataneously excited and overwhelmed by the riches the SI provides and puts us in touch with. My brain is also starting to churn with ideas… for my professional and creative pieces, things I want to do when I get back to school, etc. All in all, exactly what I had hoped to feel at this point.
More specifically, I am really, really happy to be reading the technology book, getting introduced to digital storytelling, and messing around with these blogs. One of my goals is to end the month more adept at this next level of technology — a tiny bit closer to where kids are!

At the end of the official first day of the HVWP SI ‘08, I am thankful for many things:
1. I will be reading Radical Reflections by Mem Fox with a group of brilliant and dynamic colleagues.
2. I already have seeds of digital stories, other narratives, and teacher pieces in my notebook.
3. I made too much for dinner last night and I have leftovers (no cooking for me tonight!).
I am particularly excited by the piece I wrote today; I think I finally have the beginning stages of a digital story. Thanks for giving me this opportunity, Bonnie!
Cheers!

Wow!! What a day!
This was, without a doubt, one of the busier and information filled days I’ve had in a long time. Luckily, I have managed to keep the same passwords for myself on the log ins. Anything to make it easier! Now I need to go home and organize myself. No doubt it will fly by!

Wow! I’m just overwhelmed by the possibilities and opportunities that writing can encompass! From freestyle writing to digital storytelling, and …who knows where the pen or the keyboard will lead us! I am so thrilled to be a part of this institute!

The highlight of the day for me was the brief but fruitful meeting with my reading group. We managed to quickly agree to dip our toes into Raw Materials For the Mind and then figure out how to proceed from there. Something tells me this will not be your average book group.
Looking forward to it.

What a day! My brain is processing many new ideas. Looking forward to getting home, starting the book, and trying to put together some TIW ideas. This will be a great group to work together with.

I am excited to be a fellow of the HVWP! I have wanted to do this for a while. I want to be a better writer and a better teacher of writing! I think this is just the place to help me do that. There are so many interesting and dynamic people here! I love to interact and share our thoughts…..it’s so rewarding. I have to watch out for that camera because I’ve got some funny looking shots up there!

Hey, I am finally logged on to this blog. I was beginning to feel jinxed…
This is my first blog experience. I feel like such a novice, so behind the kids I teach in this venue.
And I, too, am excited about the Raw Materials techie book.
Ditto the digital storytelling. Thanks, Bonnie!
I am on infomation overload now at 3:30, but I am excited about the potential of the digital stories. I’m already taking old family photos and spinning a narrative in my head.

Lisbet’s digital story had a powerful effect on my morning. I love someone’s interpretation of the message:
“In our lives, we take advantage of time – as opposed to time taking advantage of us.”
I certainly agree. The older I get, the more I become reflective about the relative nature of time and how to best manage it so that I can spend my time surrounding myself with the people most important to me and engaging in activites that fulfill me.
I’m excited to spend some of that time sinking my teeth into Mem Fox’s Radical Reflections this month.

I am jealous that Katelin already has her dinner made and also that she has a good idea for a digital story! So a list of what I am grateful for…what nice format.
1. I am grateful that I have a bit of a head start in my book, TRUE NOTEBOOKS, since I love to savor what I am reading and tend to take a long time to get through my favorite books.
2. I am grateful that this was a holiday weekend, and my email box is probably not as crazy as it would normally be on a Monday.

Nearly the end of day 1. My mind is really flipping around in my brain as I try to remember all that we have written, discussed and shared today. Lots of fun and learning. I wonder how I will see myself as a writer, teacher and colleague after the summer institute is over?

Here we are… the first day of the Summer Institute. For a math guy, this is a bit of a challenge. I will have to learn enough techniques and gather enough tools to be able to take back to the classroom and make those math-loving and math-phobic Junior High students write their math thought away! This is an awesome challenge. But I also feel very confident, for I know that I am not alone in this quest, that I am surrounded by a great support group. (I can also look for help in the internet… like in http://www.nctm.org/search.aspx?q=writing). Bonnie’s presentation on Digital Story telling was both thought-provoking and inspirational: it’s like producing a film… script writing, casting, directing, producing, editing… (could not believe that one of the examples she presented had been generated by an ex-student of mine!). It was also a great model for our TIW. Lunch at the Bakery was recommendable and the walk there, down and up hill, was much needed. Finally the afternoon had to be spent at the comp lab… how else are we going to communicate within our group and with the “world”?
Thanks to all of you!
